The YouYou Group is named after the youyou, or zaghareed in Arabic: a high-pitched ululation or vibrating cry, used to express joy during festive occasions. Harnessing this ancient vocal technique to full effect, the group has developed its own sound palette and timbre, centering on the female voice and its ability to occupy and transform a space. The YouYou Group’s compositions – whether performance, film or installation – are internationally renowned for their extraordinary force of expression.
In Jubel the performers draw inspiration from the symbiotic relationships that humans have traditionally maintained with sheep. In Molenbeek’s Church of St John the Baptist, they bring back the bleating of these animals and the choreographies of flocks and their shepherds, but with a twist.
YouYou Group started as a joint effort to understand how the specific use of voice can instantly create a sense of community and belonging. Jubel marks the tenth anniversary of the ensemble. After the performance, we invite the audience to celebrate together!
