Culture is taking to the streets in Molenbeek with the Aphone Soundsystem, a mobile music stand that transforms public spaces into inclusive open stages. Accessible to all, it invites the residents of Molenbeek’s neighbourhoods to play a part in their own culture by taking a moment to share their music.
The principle is simple: anyone can plug in their phone and play a track of their choice. In a matter of moments, the street comes to life, passers-by stop, chat, dance and discover new sounds. This opportunity for participation helps to forge links between neighbours, generations and communities, by putting culture at the heart of the experience.
As well as being a moment of inclusivity, the organisers are keen to keep a record of this collective experience. A playlist of the songs played will be compiled over time and archived for each neighbourhood, to reflect the diversity and musical richness of the residents.
