At a meeting highlighting the unity and cultural ambition of the Brussels Region, Brussels Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort, the two commissioners of the “Molenbeek for Brussels 2030” candidacy, Fatima Zibouh and Jan Goossens, and Molenbeek’s mayor Catherine Moureaux had an enthusiastic discussion with all the Brussels municipalities. This meeting marked a pivotal moment for Molenbeek’s candidacy to become European Capital of Culture in 2030.

Under the motto “if social cohesion through culture works in Molenbeek, it will work anywhere”, the meeting was aimed at getting the Region and the 19 municipalities to join forces to work together on “Molenbeek for Brussels 2030”. The two co-mission holders shared their visions on how to showcase the cultural and artistic richness of Molenbeek and all the Brussels communes in order to foster cooperation and inclusion and promote cultures from across the Brussels region.

We met with each municipality, through the mayor and/or alderman for culture, and we were delighted to discover the enthusiasm around the candidacy “Molenbeek for Brussels 2030” for the title of European Capital of Culture. We are determined to work with all municipalities, starting with Molenbeek, to maximise our chances of success! We want to highlight the cultural and artistic wealth of Molenbeek, but also that of all 19 municipalities in the Brussels Region, because together we are stronger!” said Fatima Zibouh & Jan Goossens, co-mission holders of MB2030.

This initiative aims not only to highlight Molenbeek’s hyper-diverse cultural dynamics, but also to give visibility to socio-cultural initiatives in Brussels. By highlighting the strength of the region’s cultural sector, “Molenbeek for Brussels 2030” aims to position the Brussels region as a beacon of culture on the European stage.

The intention is to involve the entire Brussels territory in the candidacy ‘Molenbeek for Brussels 2030’. I am delighted that the mayors and aldermen of the 19 Brussels municipalities are showing such enthusiasm. This candidacy is of symbolic importance in several ways. First of all, to show how much our capital is buzzing with culture and to put the spotlight on our artists and cultural players, but also and above all, in the year when Belgium celebrates its bicentenary, to chart the path towards the culture of the future, namely a culture that builds bridges instead of walls! I put all my trust in Fatima and Jan to draw up a candidacy that highlights all that Brussels has to offer in terms of culture and in which our artists play a central role,” said Brussels Minister-President Rudi Vervoort.

This is a great opportunity for both Brussels and Europe and a unique chance for the Region to shine from Molenbeek. The cooperation of all Brussels municipalities and the support of the Region are essential conditions for winning together. Molenbeek for Brussels will be a challenge for all of us!”, says Catherine Moureaux, mayor of Molenbeek .
